NEW YORK — Drug maker Pfizer Inc. is moving ahead with the acquisition of its largest-selling drug, Viagra, and is looking to build its new company in a few more years.
that the company is "looking to strengthen its relationship with Pfizer, which is expected to be a major force in the U. S. health care market and in the global economy."
The company is still in discussions with regulators over its patent protection program and is likely to begin the final three-plus years of its $1.9 billion acquisition of Pfizer. The news is likely to be a surprise to anyone who hasn't already seen the world's largest drugmaker.
The drugmaker was the maker of the antidepressant Paxil in 1998 and began selling the drug on the New York Stock Exchange in 2004. The company also has about 15 million square feet of the new Pfizer headquarters, which is owned by Pfizer's parent, Pfizer.
Pfizer acquired Viagra in 2005, but it will likely cost about $1.8 billion this year. It has a history of failing to get approvals for a number of other drugs and is looking to increase its revenue by about $1.1 billion, according to Pfizer.
The move comes a month after Pfizer said it would no longer be able to purchase Viagra for impotence because of a patent infringement settlement with the U. Food and Drug Administration. Viagra is the world's best-selling prescription drug, according to the latest reports by the New York Times.
The New York Times' article, based in part on a Reuters analysis of Pfizer's stock price, will be featured on its cover page on Thursday.
"Viagra is Pfizer's latest attempt to expand its presence in the global market. The company's portfolio consists of around 200 million products," the article said.
Viagra is Pfizer's most recent acquisition, and it has been the company's main focus for years. Pfizer spent about $3.5 billion to acquire Viagra, according to the Bloomberg News.
Pfizer will buy a controlling stake in the drugmaker in return for closing its New York headquarters and capital improvements, and its stock is expected to increase by $2.1 billion by the time Viagra reaches full-year sales.
